The Gift Grandparents Actually Want This Christmas

Every year we hear some version of the same thing.

"My parents don't need anything. What do I even get them?"

We understand. Grandparents tend to have enough sweaters, enough candles, and more coffee mugs than cabinet space. What they don't have enough of is time with the people they love most.

That is why a portrait of the grandkids may be the most meaningful gift you give this year. It is the gift that never ends up in a drawer. It sits on the mantel or the bedside table, and every morning it reminds them who they belong to.

There is still time to give it this Christmas. But the window is closing, and the portrait session needs to happen soon.

Why a portrait means so much to grandparents

Ask a grandparent what they treasure most in their home and many will point to a photograph. Not the one on their phone. The printed one they can pick up and hold.

Grandparents watch the grandkids grow in snapshots: a holiday here, a birthday there. A portrait captures them all together, exactly as they are this year. And it quietly tells them, "You built this. This family is part of you."

For grandparents who live far away, or who don't get to see the kids as often as they would like, that portrait becomes a daily connection.

Gift ideas families love

  • The grandkids together. All the cousins in one portrait, maybe for the first time.

  • Each family, framed. A matching set showing each of their children's families.

  • A desk or tabletop portrait. Perfect for a bedside table, an office, or a small apartment.

  • A portrait of the whole family, grandparents included. Some of the most treasured portraits we have ever made include three generations.

Here's the timeline

A gift portrait is designed and finished with care, which takes a little time. Working backward from Christmas, here is how it comes together:

  1. Schedule a Discovery Call. We'll talk about who will be in the portrait, who it's for, and where it will be displayed.

  2. Have your Portrait Experience. This is the step that needs to happen soon. Sessions must take place by [gift session deadline] for gift portraits to be ready by Christmas.

  3. Choose your portraits at your Design Reveal. You'll see your images the same day, so there is no waiting to pick the one for Grandma.

  4. We finish your gift. Your portrait is printed and finished by hand, ready to wrap.

  5. Watch them open it. That is the moment you will remember.

Tips for gathering everyone

Getting cousins, siblings, and schedules together is often the hardest part. A few things that help:

  • Pick two or three possible dates and send them to everyone at once, instead of asking each family for their availability.

  • Keep the secret with one point person. If it is a surprise, choose one sibling to coordinate so nothing slips at Sunday dinner.

  • Coordinate colors, not outfits. Choose a simple palette of three or four colors so every family looks connected. Our recent post on what to wear can help.

  • Plan around nap times. If little ones are involved, a morning session usually goes best.

Give the gift that grows more meaningful every year

The grandkids will never be exactly this age again. Neither will Grandma and Grandpa. A portrait made this season becomes more treasured with every Christmas that follows.

If you would like to give a portrait this Christmas, let's get your session on the calendar soon. Schedule your Discovery Call at philhyman.com or call us at 864-235-7864.
