Dress Code and Policies
PORTRAIT DRESS CODE
At Phil Hyman Portraits, our specialized studio meticulously orchestrates background and lighting to transform your portrait into a refined masterpiece. To ensure the utmost success of your portrait, specific clothing styles and colors are essential, while others should be avoided.
We kindly request formal attire, as for many, this portrait represents the epitome of elegance. Please bear in mind that most of our portraits encompass the full length, thus appropriate footwear to complement your attire is crucial. In general, we recommend wearing dark clothing to maintain focus on the face and eyes rather than the attire, as our meticulously contoured lighting and Lord Nelson background are not conducive to light-colored tops. Drawing from our extensive experience of over ten thousand portraits, the following guidelines have proven most effective:
For men, wear dark jackets (tuxedo or suit), a white shirt, a tie, dark pants, and formal dress shoes.
For Ladies - Dark dresses or gowns (black, navy, burgundy, dark green, etc.). White lace detailing around the collar is permissible. Minimal or no patterns are preferred, with classic jewelry such as diamonds or pearls encouraged. Additionally, please ensure to wear elegant shoes.
For young girls, dark or jewel-toned solid dresses are preferable, although ivory, cream, or off-white are acceptable if they are under the age of four. Long sleeves are recommended for adults, while short or sleeveless options are suitable for girls. Appropriate dress shoes should complement their outfit.
For Young Boys - Similar to men, or a solid dark sweater. If under the age of four, a white shirt with a bow tie may be appropriate.
Please Note: In the event that formal attire is unavoidable, adherence to the following guidelines is imperative for success: attire should still be dark and solid, avoiding busy patterns. Opt for a timeless style that will withstand changing fashions over the years, ensuring the focus remains on your face and eyes rather than your clothing.
Should you desire a less formal attire, please abstain from:
- Busy patterns (stripes, florals, checkered, plaids)
- Bright colors may divert attention from the face.
Pet Policy
At Phil Hyman Portraits, we understand that dogs are a huge part of many families. We know our dogs are our babies too! If you would like to include your dog in your portrait session, please make sure to abide by our policy.
- We require all families that come to the studio to bring a friend or family member (who is not being photographed) to take care of your dog. Please do not leave your pet unattended in the car alone.
- Small pets that can be in a hand held crate must be placed in the crate at all times except during your session.
- Larger pets that do not fit into a hand held crate must remain outside of our studio at all times with a friend or family member except during your session.
- Any pet that seems to be unsafe by a member of our staff will not be allowed to enter.
- Pets are not allowed on any furniture unless directed by our studio.
We love to include pets during our portrait sessions. These policies are here to keep our staff members, other clients/children, and your pets safe during your entire portrait experience.
Cancellation Policy
Phil Hyman Photography Appointment Cancellation Policy
We are a highly demanded, high-end portrait studio. We limit the number of appointments that we accept based on our capacity to create stunning pieces of art for our clients around the world.
We block out our studio and staff (which sometimes come in from out of town) for two hours for every appointment, hence the need to collect a small booking fee. The booking fee is to ensure that we are booking serious and committed clients. The fee is fully refundable on the day of your session/Proofing appointment as long as you show up for your appointment.
Rescheduling an appointment with less than 14 days notice will result in a loss of the booking fee. Booking fees on appointments rescheduled with more than our 14 days notice are applied to the new appointment and will be refunded on the day of the proofing appointment.
