What Is Your Why?
Art is very subjective and there are so many different styles when it comes to art/photography. It may be hard to decide who is best to capture this moment, right? Yes!!!
When a potential client calls our studio to reserve a portrait session, I always ask what they had envisioned? I ask, "are you looking for portraits that are very casual or are you looking for your portraits to be simple, classic, and timeless?" Almost 95% of them answer, "Simple, classic, and timeless!"
We know that simplicity is always best. Our goal is to capture a piece that
- stands the test of time (not trendy)
- the true personality of that subject (caught naturally),
- and we also want to know the "why".
You may ask, what do you mean "why"? I always say, there should be a reason "why" you're having a portrait taken. You should never have one "just because". Then that portrait just becomes a "picture". If there's a true reason behind having that particular moment captured then that memory will always be attached to that portrait; the portrait becomes priceless!
For example, you may have a child that is getting ready to celebrate their first birthday. What a huge milestone for your family! Your baby has changed so much during their first year and you as a parent want to hold onto that moment forever.
Another example, had a mother come into the studio recently for a session of herself. She was getting ready to celebrate her 40th birthday and wanted us to capture that time in her life. Her "why" was that before she aged anymore, she wanted a portrait to leave for her children so that they would always remember her the way she looked (right now) when she drove them to school, picked them up after their games, etc...
So my question is: are you looking to capture a simple, classic, and timeless portrait plus what is your "why"???
