I'll never forget the day a mother came into the studio to pick up her portraits and her eyes filled up with tears as she saw her artwork for the first time. Her sons were now teenagers and she wanted to hold onto that moment so the best way to do that was capture them in a portrait. As we were sitting there chatting, she looked over at me and said, "you know with all this technology such as computers and cell phones I truly believe that we are going to have an entire generation that will be lost."
It's so true! This is the most photographed generation yet we don't print those special memories to really preserve them. The photograph is taken, saved digitally, maybe shared on social media, then forgotten about.
The "in thing" is having your child's portrait taken, purchasing all the images on a CD, and thinking you will have them printed at a later time however life hits and they never get printed. What's even scarier is that with advanced technology, computers now are being built with no way to read Cd's so now those "memories" can't even be accessed to be printed when you are ready.
Read in a recent article that Vint Cerf (Google's Vice President) told the American Association for the Advancement of Science in their annual meeting, "we face a forgotten generation, or even a forgotten century. We don't want our digital lives to fade away. If we want to preserve them, we need to make sure that the digital objects we create today can still be rendered far into the future." His warning was that music, photos, games, and even letters will be lost forever.
Think about it, that is a tremendous amount of history to be lost! That's why Phil Hyman Portraits has always been a studio that offers artwork that is completed and ready to hang on your walls. Yes, we do embrace technology and know that it's important but in the end, we know that the only way to enjoy your portraits now and for generations to come is to preserve them on your walls.
