A Simple Portrait
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”—Leonardo da Vinci
When it comes to capturing a child, we believe that nothing should take away from that child’s face and true expression.
This goes for:
- the clothing that is chosen,
- any accessories added,
- the background and props used,
- and most importantly the expression drawn out of that child.
In a formal, simple, and classic portrait, clothing selection will either make or break the portrait. Solid tones are always best. Pastels tend to keep children visually younger however dark, jewel tones give a sense of formality and elegance. We always recommend bare feet for younger children. We would rather see the bottom of a child’s foot rather than the bottom of their shoes. Keep accessories such as jewelry and bows very simple and not distracting or overpowering. Nothing should take away from their faces.
When it comes to a simple portrait, we even believe the background and props we use as portrait photographers are so important. Our formal backgrounds are hand painted or our window light and in tones that compliment anyone’s skin tone. And if we use props, they are simple pieces of furniture that you would see in someone’s home.
Most importantly, it’s our goal to capture the true essence of the child’s personality whether their big smile will light up any room or whether their inquisitive eyes draw you in.
When all these details come together, then the portraits will stand the test of time! Simplicity is always best!
